2022 July Natural History Field Trips

Michael Heim | Published on 6/22/2022

Greetings everyone!

This July we will once again head north to the Lake Superior region for two natural history excursions.  All field trips are courtesy of the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe College’s Extension Program and are for the general public. The trips are as follows:

Wednesday July 6th:  Lost Creek Falls from 10:00 a.m. until approximately 6:30 p.m.

Located just south of Cornucopia, this waterfall is unusual in that one can walk behind it!  It plunges fifteen feet over a sandstone ledge. This sandstone bedrock originated as river deposits flowing into the rift lake which formed the original Lake Superior. In season, thimbleberries and other berries may be relished along the relatively new 1.5 mile trail that we will take to reach the beautiful glen.

Wednesday June 20th:  Little Girl’s Point from 10:00 a.m. until approximately 5:30 p.m.

This scenic beach, just across the Michigan border, has the greatest diversity of colorful rocks and gemstones anywhere within Lake Superior.  Naturally, it is popular with agate collectors. The ravines behind the beach shelter deep, old-growth hemlock forest with orchids and other Pacific Northwest plant species. These are found in the East only near Lake Superior.  Little Girl’s Point was a traditional Ojibwe canoe stopover along the way to the Porcupine Mountains and, legend has it, was the site of a battle between two tribes.

We will meet at the main entrance in front of the LCO College. The field trip programs are sponsored by the Extension Department at no cost to the participants. This includes registration, the tasty bag lunches, and transportation in the college’s new touring van. Once the van fills, you can carpool or follow us in your own vehicle. Please feel free to bring the entire family to enjoy Nature and learn more about its wonders. Unfortunately, neither of these field trips is handicapped-accessible.

Please make sure that you register ahead of time at this link:  https://www.lco.edu/lcooc-extension  to register for July’s field trips. Since the website is updated at the beginning of the month (July), you will need to wait to register until that time. If computer access is unavailable or you are having trouble with the registration form, please contact Cali Quaderer, LCO College Extension Program Coordinator, at cquaderer@Lco.edu, phone 715-634-4790 ext. 137.  After you register, you will receive a confirmation email from Extension a day or two prior to the field trip.

Für unsere Exkursionen sind Deutsch sprechende Teilnehmer herzlich eingeladen.  Erläuterungen in Deutsch stellen kein Problem dar.

Looking forward to seeing you there!
