2026 September Field Trip-Cable Natural History Museum

Michael Heim | Published on 8/20/2026

Greetings everyone!

Courtesy of the Cable Natural History Museum, for the month of September, we once again have two wonderful natural history field trips planned.  One is to the very headwaters of the St. Croix River and the other farther downstream where the trickle becomes considerably bigger.  Please note that both field trips have had their dates changed.

Wednesday September 23rd:  Brule/St. Croix Boardwalk from 10:00 a.m. until approximately 4:00 p.m.

This boardwalk, built entirely by volunteers, is the longest and most fascinating in our region.  It winds its way thru the wetlands which cover the headwaters of both the Brule and St. Croix Rivers, the ancient drainage channel of Lake Superior during the waning days of the last ice age.  Several types of wetlands including cedar swamp and black ash swamp will be traversed and investigated without getting your feet wet.  Evidence of wildlife, along with interesting lichens and plants, make photography a must.

Wednesday September 30th:  Sandrock Cliffs from 10:00 a.m. until approximately 4:30 p.m.

This relatively easy trail system follows the eastern bank of the scenic St. Croix River near Grantsburg.  Along the way are stepped cliffs of pale Cambrian sandstone, deposited near the shore of an ancient sea.  Botanically, it is a very interesting place.  Southern species like wild yam and bladdernut trees grow on the floodplain, while slightly higher areas nearby have an acidic soil flora typical of northern Wisconsin.  Sandrock Cliffs is on the National Register of Historic Places, having had camps at least as long as 5000 years ago.

The 3-mile trail loop is relatively level.

We will meet in front of the Cable Natural History Museum and carpool to the field sites. The museum van is first come, first served. Regarding the Sandrock Cliffs field trip, if you are to the south of Cable, you may arrange to meet us in the L & M Fleet Supply parking lot in Hayward.

The field trip program is sponsored by the museum at a cost of $35 for members/$45 for non-members.    Please feel free to bring the entire family to enjoy Nature and learn more about its wonders.  These educational hikes are not fully handicapped-accessible. Participants must bring their own bag lunches.

Please make sure that you register for one or both of the field tripsat cablemuseum.org/events or call 715-798-3890.  Space is limited, so register early.

Für unsere Exkursionen sind Deutsch sprechende Teilnehmer herzlich eingeladen.  Erläuterungen in Deutsch stellen kein Problem dar.

Hope y’all can join us!
