APPLICATION FOR NEW GRAVEL PIT NEAR ROUND LAKE UPDATE

The Sawyer County Zoning Committee just voted unanimously to deny the CUP for the proposed new gravel pit north of Round Lake.
The public hearing was held prior to the vote. Prior to the public hearing it was announced that the county sent out 10 letters to owners within 300’ of the proposed gravel pit and received 5 back in opposition. In addition, the county received 44 letters opposing prior to the hearing. Approximately a dozen people spoke in-person at the meeting and another half-dozen spoke virtually (Zoom).

Sawyer County has received an application for a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) for a new gravel pit near Round Lake.
There are concerns about noise, environmental impacts, property values, traffic, and other impacts.
The Sawyer County Zoning Committee is meeting THIS FRIDAY at 8:30 a.m. and you can attend via Zoom. Written comments must be summited by tomorrow, April 15, 2021 to jay.kozlowski@sawyercountygov.org.

, pages 84-109. The new pit is proposed between Twin Lakes Road and Highway 77, just north of the Bethel Road subdivision (map with approximate location shown below).
The application states crushing will be done from March 15 to December 15 with crushing operations from 4:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday with occasional operations on Sundays. The application is silent on how many years the CUP would be in effect. You can read about more details and view maps in the application at the link above.
The Town of Round Lake board met on April 8, 2021, where this item was on the agenda. Approximately a dozen people spoke in opposition to the CUP. The Town of Round Lake Planning Commission recommended the Town of Round Lake Board deny the CUP. After discussion, the Town of Round Lake Board voted to send a denial recommendation to Sawyer County. The town’s position is only advisory to the County.
The CUP will next be taken up by the Sawyer County Zoning Committee on April 16, 2021 at 8:30 a.m. There is a public hearing on this CUP on the agenda (Item 4.k). You can attend the public hearing via zoom here:
